Excursions
After the Conference on September 20-22 a three-day geological excursion will be carried out. The excursion includes two stays for night at the “Krabbe” tourist center, situated at Krabbe Peninsula. The approximate cost is 5000 rubles for each participant. The excursion will be devoted to the acquaintance with volcanic formations in the rifting depressions of south-west Primorye – Kraskinskaya, Poimenskaya, and Pushkinskaya, demonstrating the features of magmatism manifestation in the zones of sliding of the eastern continental margin of Asia in the Cenozoic time. The excursion participants will get acquainted with volcanic edifices composed of the products of different-depth volcanism (basalts, andesites, rhyolites) and hydrothermal transformation of rocks (zeolitites, ornamental-semi-precious stones). Managers of the Khasan geological excursion: Dr. Vladimir Popov – leading researcher of the Laboratory of Petrology of Volcanic Formations, and Dr. Alexander Chashchin – senior researcher of the Laboratory of Geochemistry, FEGI, FEB of RAS.
Approximate schedule of the excursion Departure by bus from Vladivostok at 9 a.m. The travelling to the first object takes about 2 hours. In the Razdol’naya River basin (Pushkinskaya depression) the excursionists will visit the stratotype sections of Ust’-Suifun suite composed of the horizons of coarse gravels and sands alternating with ash-pumice deposits – the products of the catastrophic explosive acid volcanism (burning ash clouds) that manifested itself in the Oligocene-Miocene time on the territory of South-West Primorye. In the environs of Slavyanka settlement on Mal’tsev Cape (Poimenskaya depression) the participants will see the following features formed in the Late Oligocene-Early Miocene: a cone of the basalt-andesite stratovolcano (in the bank section), extrusive domes of dacites and rhyodacites rising above the sea port, and thick flows of rhyodacite lavas composing Bryus Cape. Arrival at the “Krabbe” tourist center – at 5 p.m.
Volcanic ashes of Ust’-Suifun suite overlapped by the Neogene basalts, Peschanyi Peninsula (Pushkinskaya depression) Stone idols in the environs of Slavyanka settlement (Poimenskaya depression) Krabbe Peninsula. The excursion participants will see different types of volcanic edifices and geological bodies (volcanic necks, extrusive domes, explosive breccias, tuffizites, dikes, lava flows, and pyroclastic deposits) that reflect the features of manifestation of the Eocene bimodal volcanism of the Kraskinskaya rifting depression. They are excellently stripped in the coastal outcrops available for study. The excursionists will be able to get acquainted with the products of the fluid-explosive volcanism (tuffizites) whose outflows on Krabbe Peninsula formed an unusual volcanogenic cuesta relief with the shows of zeolitites and ornamental-semi-precious stones – fluidal and spheroloidal lavas of rhyolites, tuffs, opal, and chalcedony filling the lithophysae in volcanic glasses, and others. Return to the “Krabbe”
tourist center – at 4 p.m. After supper we suggest to discuss the problems of
the rifting nature and volcanism of the Cenozoic depressions of South-West
Primorye. Coastal outcrops of Krabbe Peninsula (Kraskinskaya depression) Novgorodsky Peninsula and Kraskinskoe coal deposit. In the Posyet settlement area situated on Novgorodsky Peninsula, the excursionists will continue to get acquainted with volcanic formations of Kraskinskaya depression – the covering andesites and breaking them rhyolites and intrusive pyroclastites (tuffizites). In the coastal outcrops of the Expedition Bay and in the area of a coal deposit the excursionists will see the type section of tufogene-sedimentary rocks of Kraskinskaya suite containing a widely known Kraskinskaya flora of the Late Eocene- Early Oligicene age with the well preserved plant imprints. Return to Vladivostok - at 6 p.m. More detailed information on the field excursion will be offered later. Recommendations on the accoutrement for the field excursion: With regard to the unstable autumn character of the weather and routes along the coastal zone the excursion participants must have an autumn complete set of clothes, a geological hammer, a raincoat, and rubber boots. We recommend also taking pocket flashes with you. The questions about the geological excursions, please, address to Alexander Chashchin. E-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Participants are welcomed to take part in several post-conference excursions: Sightseeing tour and Boat trip (23 September), and Three-day filed trip (24-26 September). Information on participation prize will be provided later. Excursions schedule can be changed by the organizers under weather conditions and other circumstances.
